South Africa and microfinance, here I come!!

So, having rested on the beaches of my sunny homeland of Croatia for the last few weeks I feel ready to tackle the challenges (and the fun!) ahead. I have partly made my way through the World Bank's Microfinance Handbook as well as through the online course put out by the UNCDF. I am far from an expert on microfinance now mind you, but I definitely feel more ready for the internship!

My task is to analyze a microfinance institution (MFI) with the goal of helping them increase their efficiency and develop their overall strategy. If all goes as planned, I will find a job in the field while I am down there. South Africa seems like the perfect place from which to enter the microfinance field in Africa in general. I have a lot to learn still but the IOMBA has prepared me well I feel. It is going to feel great to be able to put all that learning to use finally.

In transit to South Africa I have a layover in Egypt so I will try to see the pyramids if possible. When I land in Johannesburg I am staying with an old friend from Japan, which is also exciting! There is also the opportunity to reconnect with some Serbian members of the family whom my family lost contact with during the Yugoslav war. All in all, whatever else happens three months down the road, I know that there are amazing times ahead!

See you all on the other side of the equator!
