Well it's been forever and a day since I last blogged anything. After Japan I didn't think I would get back to it but I find strangely compelled to now with my time in Geneva coming to a close. Sometimes I feel the more my life changes the more it stays the same. Point in case, I remember sitting on my computer two years ago in Japan with only two months left in the country and an incredibly uncertain future. I am in a very similar position now. I have spent the last year in Switzerland getting my MBA in international development. It's been a hell of a ride, and intense beyond expectations! I don't think I've ever worked so much or so hard in my life -- they aren't kidding when they say one year MBA programs are intensive. Thankfully blond hair hides gray well. In two months I'm done though, and much like after leaving Japan I will be making a short trip to Croatia to visit family and recoup before moving on to the next stage of my journey -- South Africa!
Going to Africa has long been a dream of mine, for many many reasons that have come about at different stages of my life and added up to a powerful driving force. In August I will finally make it come true. I will be going to South Africa for three months to do an internship in microfinance. I hope to find some way to stay down there longer than that though! Or if not there, anywhere else in Africa really. I have no real solid plan on how I will do that but all I know is that I don't want to go back to Canada. Back up plans are either back to Geneva for a bit or to Croatia. In other words, uncertainty rules my life, as usual. I love the adventure, but it would be nice to have someplace to call home at some point! Home still feels a long long way away however.
In any case, I have too much to do in the next two months to really worry about issues of existentialism. In addition to my studies I am also helping organize a large event here in Switzerland called the Geneva Forum on Social Change (www.gfsc2009.com) which features documentaries on world issues as well as some pretty big name speakers, including Desmond Tutu! I can't wait to meet him. I am also doing some side projects to develop my skills for what I will be doing in Africa, and trying to master several excel based computer programs, which is not my forte. I wouldn't be me however, if I weren't also having as much fun as possible with the wonderful people that I always seem to meet along the way in my travels. There are some truly amazing people on my program, and I will miss them and Geneva a lot more than I expected. I also strangely keep finding time to watch a little Battlestar Galactica. Damn that show is addictive. Well back to studying I go. It's a nice day.....might as well study by the lake before meeting some people for a game of ultimate -- my first! Watch this space....
